Hearing usually deteriorates very gradually, often so slowly that the impaired person may not even be aware of it. Recent studies have shown that hearing loss may be an early sign of dementia. In general, research suggests that hearing sensitivity has serious consequences for the neural processes supporting both perception and cognition of sounds, especially speech sounds. The solution may simply be a hearing aid. Only a visit to a hearing professional will let you know for sure. Once the patient accepts help, they may face the often frustrating task of relearning how to listen and understand the sounds they have not heard in years.
